Durgapur:
A violent altercation erupted on National Highway 19 in West Bengal when a civic volunteer and a truck driver engaged in a physical confrontation that unfolded before numerous onlookers.
Eyewitnesses report that the incident began when the civic volunteer halted a truck traveling on the Kolkata-bound section of National Highway 19 during a designated no-entry period. The volunteer allegedly solicited money from the driver, and upon refusal, physically assaulted him, resulting in a head injury to the driver.
The confrontation at the Budbud bypass in Bardhaman district escalated dramatically when the wounded driver removed his footwear and repeatedly struck the civic volunteer while bystanders watched. The situation intensified further as additional truck drivers converged on the scene, heightening tensions.
According to witnesses, law enforcement officers present during the incident failed to intervene, causing a temporary suspension of traffic flow on this busy highway route.
Video footage of the confrontation has circulated widely, prompting significant criticism from various sectors. BJP representative Raman Sharma commented on the incident, stating, "This incident makes it clear that there is complete lawlessness in West Bengal. Neither does the public trust the police, nor are the police able to ensure the safety of the people. That is why we are demanding the resignation of the Chief Minister and the Home Minister of the state."
