Kolkata:
Following Tuesday's deluge of over 250 mm of rainfall that caused severe waterlogging, Kolkata is expected to experience light to moderate showers accompanied by thunderstorms as the city approaches Durga Puja celebrations, according to the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) Wednesday announcement.
IMD officials indicated that south Bengal will continue to experience light to moderate rainfall across numerous locations until September 28, due to a low-pressure system anticipated to form over the north and central Bay of Bengal on Thursday.
The existing low-pressure area positioned over the West Bengal-Odisha coasts is projected to dissipate by Wednesday evening, as reported by weather authorities.
Mahasasthi, which marks the commencement of the five-day festival, falls on September 28.
The IMD has forecast heavy precipitation in isolated areas within South 24 Parganas, Jhargram, Purba Medinipur, and Paschim Medinipur districts on September 27.
The emerging low-pressure system forming Thursday is expected to intensify into a depression over the northwest and adjacent west-central Bay of Bengal the following day, before crossing the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coastline around September 27.
During the 24-hour period ending at 8:30 am Wednesday, Medinipur town recorded the region's heaviest rainfall at 60 mm, with Kalaikunda following at 44 mm, according to meteorological data.
Kolkata experienced extremely heavy rainfall measuring 251.4 mm within the 24-hour timeframe ending at 8:30 am Tuesday, while neighboring Salt Lake received 230 mm of precipitation during the same interval, as indicated by meteorological records.
