UP Folk Singer and Husband Detained for 'Offensive Song' Targeting Goddess Durga

Authorities confirmed that Sargam's YouTube presence includes over 60,000 followers.
Folk artist Saroj Sargam and her spouse were apprehended for allegedly publishing content with disrespectful comments about Goddess Durga on her YouTube platform, according to police officials on Wednesday.
Officials reported that Sargam, who resides in Garhwa village within Mirzapur district, released the controversial video on September 19. The content prompted significant anger among Hindu community members.
Subsequently, Sub-Inspector Santosh Kumar Rai from Madihan police station submitted a formal complaint, which led to case registration.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Somen Barma indicated that both surveillance and cyber teams were engaged for the investigation process.
"Following the video's viral spread, an FIR was registered on September 19. Investigation revealed evidence confirming involvement of Saroj Sargam and her husband. Both individuals were subsequently arrested," he stated in a recorded announcement.
Sargam's arrest occurred Tuesday alongside her husband Ram Milan Bind, whom police identified as responsible for the video's production and direction.
SSP Barma further revealed that Sargam had illegally occupied approximately 15 bighas of forest property, which was subsequently recovered during a coordinated operation between forest and police departments. Additional legal proceedings are being initiated regarding this matter as well.
The contentious video faced substantial criticism from religious leaders. Juna Akhara saint and Badrinath temple mahant Yoganand Giri demanded immediate apprehension of the singer, cautioning that akhara saints would mobilize public demonstrations if appropriate action wasn't taken.
Police officials noted that Sargam's YouTube channel features approximately 35-40 uploaded videos and maintains over 60,000 subscribers.
