New Delhi:
The head of a prestigious ashram located in the upscale Vasant Kunj area of Delhi has been charged with sexual misconduct involving more than a dozen female students, according to police reports.
Swami Chaitanyananda Saraswati, also known as Partha Sarathy, who directs the Sri Sharda Institute of Indian Management, is facing allegations of harassing scholarship recipients from economically disadvantaged backgrounds who were pursuing post-graduate management diploma programs.
Police officials stated that among the 32 students who provided statements, at least 17 female students have accused Swami Chaitanyananda of inappropriate behavior including verbal abuse, sending inappropriate text messages, and unwanted physical contact. The victims also alleged that female staff members and administrative personnel pressured them to comply with the accused's demands.
According to the students' testimonies, certain wardens employed at the ashram facilitated introductions to the accused.
The accused reportedly summoned students to his private quarters and enticed them with promises of complimentary international travel, as evidenced by inappropriate message exchanges with the victims.
Based on these testimonies, authorities have filed charges of sexual harassment and additional offenses against Swami Chaitanyananda, confirmed Amit Goyal, Deputy Commissioner of Police for the South-West District.
Law enforcement has reviewed surveillance footage and conducted searches at both the crime scene and the accused's residence. However, the suspect remains at large, with sources indicating he was last detected near Agra. Multiple police teams are currently conducting a search operation.
The National Commission for Women (NCW) has independently initiated an investigation into the case.
During their inquiry, police discovered a Volvo vehicle in the institute's underground parking that belonged to Swami Chaitanyananda. Upon inspection, authorities determined the car displayed a counterfeit diplomatic license plate (39 UN 1), which has been confiscated.
Following the emergence of these allegations, the ashram management removed him from his position and expelled him from the institution. The Delhi branch where the accused served as director is affiliated with a prominent spiritual organization in South India.
The Dakshinamnaya Sri Sharada Peetha, Sringeri, which oversees the Delhi facility, has released an official statement declaring that Swami Chaityananda's behavior and activities were unlawful, inappropriate, and contrary to the Peetha's principles. As a result, they have terminated all associations with the accused.
The Delhi establishment operated with two separate cohorts, each comprising over 35 students.
