Aadhaar Database Remains Protected, Multi-Layered Tech Being Used: Ministry

The UIDAI system has achieved prestigious international certifications for its robust security standards.

New Delhi:

The government has implemented extensive protective measures to safeguard the personal information of Aadhaar cardholders, with no data breaches reported from the central repository to date.

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology released a statement confirming that the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) employs a sophisticated multi-layered security architecture to protect sensitive information. "Till date, no breach of Aadhaar card holders' data has occurred from the UIDAI database," the statement emphasized.

This protection system utilizes a "defence-in-depth" strategy, incorporating multiple security layers to shield the database. UIDAI also conducts systematic inspections and audits to ensure these protective mechanisms remain fully operational.

During a Lok Sabha session on December 17, 2025, Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Jitin Prasada, provided these details. The Minister highlighted that cutting-edge encryption technologies are deployed to secure data during transmission and storage, effectively preventing unauthorized access to citizens' confidential information.

The UIDAI infrastructure has received top-tier international security certifications. "UIDAI's Information Security Management System is ISO 27001:2022-certified by STQC. UIDAI is also certified ISO/IEC 27701:2019 (Privacy Information Management System). Further, UIDAI is declared as a protected system and hence the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) continuously provide security advices to maintain its cybersecurity posture," according to the statement.

To maintain contemporary security standards, an independent organization evaluates compliance with established protocols. This includes regular security evaluations known as Static Application Security Testing (SAST) and Dynamic Application Security Testing (DAST).

Aadhaar currently stands as the world's largest biometric identification system, serving approximately 134 crore active users and having successfully processed more than 16,000 crore identity verifications.
