Police said the operation was carried out based on specific intelligence inputs regarding drug trafficking.
Cachar Police in Assam conducted a successful anti-narcotics operation resulting in the seizure of 90,000 Yaba tablets with an estimated illicit market value of Rs 26 crore. Two drug smugglers were arrested during this major crackdown in the state.
Yaba, known as "crazy medicine" in Thai language, is a dangerous combination of methamphetamine and caffeine. This synthetic drug is predominantly manufactured in Southeast and East Asia before being trafficked to other regions.
The significant drug bust occurred at Rongpur in Assam's Cachar district when authorities intercepted a truck suspected of transporting illegal substances from Mizoram's Champhai district en route to Guwahati. A meticulous search revealed the Yaba tablets hidden within a specially designed concealed compartment of the vehicle.
Law enforcement identified the apprehended individuals as Dalim Uddin Laskar and Abed Sultan Barbhuiya, both residents of Dholai area in Cachar district.
According to police officials, the operation was executed following precise intelligence information about the movement of a substantial shipment of prohibited substances. Based on this intelligence, tactical teams were positioned at key locations, which ultimately led to the successful interception of the smuggling vehicle.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma acknowledged the accomplishment on social media platform X, stating: "YABA tablets worth Rs 27 crore - now history! In an excellent anti-narcotics operation by @cacharpolice in Rongpur, a vehicle coming from a neighbouring state was intercepted, leading to the seizure of 90,000 Yaba tablets and the arrest of two persons."
A senior police official revealed that the department had received advance information regarding a large consignment of banned substances being transported from Mizoram. "Based on the input, teams were deployed at strategic points and the vehicle was intercepted," the official elaborated.
Authorities have registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, and investigations are continuing to identify and dismantle the broader drug network involved in this trafficking operation.
In a separate but related development on Sunday, Assam Police arrested seven individuals and confiscated 86 kg of opium during a raid at a residential property in Udiana village, Kamrup district. The homeowner, who was among those arrested, reportedly had prior charges related to narcotics offenses.
This additional raid was also conducted based on specific intelligence information received by police authorities, demonstrating Assam's ongoing commitment to combating drug trafficking in the region.
