New Delhi:

Dense fog severely impacted operations at Delhi Airport on Monday, resulting in the cancellation of 228 flights and the diversion of five others to nearby airports due to poor visibility conditions, according to an official statement.

While Air India announced the cancellation of approximately 40 flights via an X post earlier in the day, other airlines, including the affected IndiGo, did not disclose specific numbers regarding their cancelled or delayed flights.

The airport official confirmed that "a total of 228 flights—131 departures and 97 arrivals—have been cancelled due to low visibility so far," with an additional five flights diverted to alternative airports.

The Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) issued a statement indicating that "on-ground officials are working closely with all stakeholders to assist passengers and provide necessary support across all Terminals."

IndiGo acknowledged in their statement that "low visibility (below minima), due to dense fog, has severely impacted operations at Delhi and other airports across northern India, which is unfortunately beyond our control."

The airline further explained that operations were being adjusted according to weather conditions, with some flights experiencing delays and others proactively cancelled throughout the day to prioritize safety and reduce extended waiting periods at the airport. However, IndiGo did not specify the number of affected flights.

IndiGo representatives stated their teams were "closely monitoring" the situation and coordinating with Delhi airport authorities. The airline also mentioned issuing advisories to customers and "proactively" informing them to minimize inconvenience.

Air India posted on X in the morning: "Poor visibility due to dense fog in Delhi this morning has impacted flight operations for all airlines. We are closely monitoring conditions and will resume operations as soon as it is safe to do so."

The national carrier added that several flights had been cancelled "in the interest of safety, and to avoid prolonged uncertainty for the guests," listing approximately 40 cancelled arrivals and departures for the day.

Delhi airport, the busiest in India, typically handles around 1,300 flight movements daily, making the disruption particularly significant for national air travel.
