Tragic Farewell: Sandeep Kaur Says Goodbye to Husband Navjot Singh After Fatal BMW Collision
New Delhi:
What began as a peaceful Sunday outing turned into unimaginable tragedy for Sandeep Kaur when her husband Navjot Singh was killed in a devastating road accident. Two days after the horrific crash, an injured and grief-stricken Sandeep had her final moments with her 52-year-old husband before his cremation. In a heartbreaking scene, she reached from her stretcher to caress her husband's face one last time as their relatives struggled to contain their emotions.
Navjot Singh, who served as a deputy secretary in the Union Finance Ministry, lost his life when a speeding BMW crashed into the couple's motorcycle near Delhi Cantonment metro station on Sunday afternoon. His wife Sandeep, who works as a teacher, suffered multiple fractures in the collision.
The couple had spent their morning visiting the Bangla Sahib gurdwara in central Delhi followed by lunch at Karnataka Bhavan in RK Puram. The accident occurred as they were making their way home to Pratap Nagar when a BMW X5 struck their motorcycle from behind. Navjot sustained severe head and facial trauma, while Sandeep was left with numerous fractures.
Gaganpreet, the BMW driver, transported the injured couple to a hospital in GTB Nagar, approximately 19 kilometers from the accident site. The journey took around 40 minutes. Upon arrival, doctors pronounced Navjot dead, while Sandeep was subsequently transferred to another medical facility.
Both Gaganpreet and her husband Parikshit, who was a passenger in the vehicle, now face serious charges including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, rash driving, and concealing evidence.
Controversy has emerged regarding Gaganpreet's decision to transport the critically injured couple to a distant hospital rather than seeking immediate nearby medical attention. Police sources have revealed that the GTB Nagar hospital is partially owned by Gaganpreet's father, prompting Navjot's family to allege a deliberate cover-up attempt. Gaganpreet has been arrested and placed in judicial custody.
In her statement to police, Sandeep recounted her desperate pleas: "I repeatedly begged her to take us to a nearby hospital. My husband was unconscious and needed urgent medical care. Despite my continuous requests, she drove us to a small, distant hospital instead."
