Argentine football legend Lionel Messi's return to India after 14 years quickly descended into chaos on Saturday. Landing in Kolkata at 2:30 am, his visit lasted less than 24 hours before turning disorderly. Frustrated fans who purchased expensive tickets but failed to see the football icon became violent, damaging stadium facilities. Security personnel had to escort Messi out, prematurely ending his appearance.
Following the disturbance at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium, authorities arrested Satadru Dutta, the primary organizer and promoter of Messi's 'G.O.A.T. Tour of India'.
Bidhannagar Police filed an FIR with multiple serious charges including assaulting government officials, waging war against the government, and destroying public property. The charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) include:
Section 324(4)(5) concerning property damage valued between Rs 20,000 and Rs 1,00,000, punishable by up to two years imprisonment.
Section 326 addressing mischief involving fire or explosive substances.
Section 132 covering assault or criminal force against public servants.
Section 121 pertaining to causing harm to public servants or waging war against the government.
Sections 45 and 46 dealing with abetment, conspiracy, and those who facilitate criminal acts.
Additional charges have been filed under the Maintenance of Public Order Act and Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.
The incident unfolded when Messi arrived at Salt Lake Stadium with Inter Miami teammates Luis Suarez and Rodrigo de Paul to an enthusiastic reception from thousands of waiting supporters.
The football superstar was scheduled to take a lap around the stadium, but chaos erupted before this could happen. When Messi entered the grounds, he was immediately surrounded by politicians, dignitaries, and security personnel, blocking the view for fans who had paid up to Rs 14,000 for tickets. Spectators began booing officials and throwing chairs and bottles in protest.
Security quickly evacuated Messi from the premises, after which further vandalism occurred.
