Due to severe visibility issues amid dense fog, multiple vehicles collided on the Noida Expressway on Saturday morning.
Noida:
A massive accident involving more than a dozen vehicles occurred on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway amid thick fog in the Delhi-NCR region on Saturday morning. The pile-up, which included cars and trucks, resulted in several injuries and created a significant traffic jam on the expressway.
The incident took place on the Kundli-Ghaziabad-Palwal Expressway, a six-lane, 135 km thoroughfare that spans across Haryana and Uttar Pradesh states.
Footage from the accident site reveals the severity of the collision. One white car had mounted the central divider with its front end severely damaged. Nearby, a truck was stationary, while another passenger vehicle was trapped beneath a different truck. The vehicles apparently crashed into each other due to the extremely limited visibility caused by the dense fog.
A video shared by the Press Trust of India showed multiple vehicles involved in the collision on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway, with several people reported injured.
Police and toll management staff are currently working to clear the roadway using cranes to remove the damaged vehicles. The Gautam Buddh Nagar Police Commissioner's office confirmed their presence at the scene, stating, "In the said case, the police force is present at the scene, and necessary actions are being taken," via a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Authorities have yet to release specific details regarding the exact number of vehicles involved or the total number of people injured in the incident.
Residents across Delhi-NCR awakened to extremely thick smog conditions on Saturday, severely limiting visibility on roads. Near the expressway, Noida Sector-125 recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 449 at noon, placing it in the 'severe' category according to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) measurements.
In response to the hazardous conditions, the Gautam Buddh Nagar Traffic Police has implemented speed restrictions. On the Yamuna Expressway, light vehicles are now limited to 75 km/hour while heavy vehicles must not exceed 60 km/hour.
The Noida-Greater Noida Expressway has similar restrictions: 75 km/hour for light vehicles and 50 km/hour for heavy vehicles.
On the Noida elevated road, speed limits have been reduced to 50 km/hour for light vehicles and 40 km/hour for heavy vehicles.
