A soldier lost his life due to a gunshot from his service rifle outside a military hospital in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, officials reported.

Law enforcement has initiated inquest proceedings to determine whether the soldier's death resulted from accidental discharge or self-inflicted injury, they stated.

The soldier, who worked as a driver, was sitting in a stationary medicine delivery vehicle in the main town when he sustained the fatal gunshot wound.

Fellow soldiers rushed to investigate after hearing the gunshot and discovered him surrounded by blood. The military personnel was immediately transported to the hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival, according to officials.
