Nearly 200 Individuals Sickened After Consuming Buckwheat Flour During Navratri in Delhi

Police officials promptly initiated awareness campaigns among local vendors and community members.
New Delhi:
Approximately 200 individuals have suffered from food poisoning after reportedly consuming buckwheat flour while observing Navratri fasting rituals in northwest Delhi, police reported on Tuesday.
The affected patients from various neighborhoods including Jahangirpuri, Mahendra Park, Samaypur, Bhalswa Dairy, Lal Bagh, and Swaroop Nagar were found to be in stable condition with no severe cases identified, according to police statements.
Police authorities began receiving emergency calls around 6:10 am on Tuesday at the Jahangirpuri police station, reporting numerous people falling ill after consuming food prepared with Kuttu atta (buckwheat flour).
"Emergency response teams were dispatched to BJRM Hospital, where the chief medical officer confirmed that approximately 150 to 200 individuals had presented to the emergency department since morning," police officials added.
Authorities noted that the suspected food poisoning incident caused significant concern throughout the area, particularly as many residents were observing religious fasting during the Navratri festival.
Law enforcement immediately began informing shopkeepers, vendors, and local residents about the situation through patrol officers and public announcement systems to prevent further alarm.
Police have notified the Food Department for appropriate follow-up actions, including quality testing of buckwheat flour being sold in neighborhood markets.
"We are working closely with the Food Department and local health officials. Community awareness efforts are underway to ensure public safety," stated a police officer.
