Dharmendra passed away on November 24 at the age of 89.
Home Minister Amit Shah has described the demise of legendary actor Dharmendra as a "great loss," highlighting the actor's remarkable versatility in portraying diverse characters like Veeru in 'Sholay' and Parimal Tripathi in the romantic comedy 'Chupke Chupke'.
Speaking at a prayer ceremony held for the actor in Delhi on Thursday, Shah revealed that although he had never met Dharmendra personally, he had received a phone call from the superstar during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections when Hema Malini was contesting from Mathura. The minister recounted how Dharmendra had sent a letter to be read at a campaign rally and had expressed his desire for Hema Malini to secure a substantial victory.
Shah, who attended the gathering as a fan rather than in his capacity as Home Minister, emphasized that Dharmendra possessed a pure and clean heart.
"Dharmendra ji began his journey in the film industry during a time when financial resources were limited and today's luxuries were absent. Through his unwavering dedication and hard work, he achieved remarkable success. He was an extraordinary actor who could brilliantly portray the character in 'Sholay' while also delivering a completely different performance in 'Chupke Chupke'," Shah remarked.
The minister also acknowledged Dharmendra's contributions to patriotic cinema. "I have viewed his film 'Aankhen' numerous times. Even then, I sensed 'this is a genuine patriot, not merely acting.' Everyone knows that Dharamji was born to a farmer and harbored deep love for his country. Dharmendra ji's passing will forever remain a significant loss. May his noble soul find eternal peace," he stated.
Dharmendra died on November 24 at the age of 89 following a short illness. Thursday's prayer meeting, organized by Hema Malini, was attended by several prominent figures including Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, who all came to pay their respects.
