Former JNU student Umar Khalid has been granted interim bail by a Delhi court on Thursday to attend his sister's wedding ceremony. The bail period extends from December 16 to 29.
Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai approved the temporary relief for Khalid, who stands accused in the case concerning the broader conspiracy behind the 2020 Delhi riots.
The court has instructed Khalid to provide a personal bond of Rs 20,000 along with two sureties of equal amount as part of the bail conditions.
Among the stipulations, the judge clearly stated, "During the interim bail period, the applicant shall not use social media." Khalid's interactions are restricted to "family members, relatives and friends" only.
The court further mandated that Khalid must "remain at his home or at the places where the ceremonies of marriage as mentioned by him will take place."
Additional conditions include prohibiting any contact with witnesses and requiring Khalid to share his mobile phone number with the investigating officer.
According to the court's directive, Khalid must surrender to prison authorities on the evening of December 29 when his interim bail period concludes.
This is not the first time Khalid has received such temporary relief. Last year, he was granted a seven-day interim bail to attend another wedding, and a similar arrangement was made for him in 2022 as well.
The Delhi court's decision balances humanitarian considerations with judicial requirements while maintaining necessary restrictions during the temporary release period.
