New Delhi:
Police discovered the decomposed remains of a 65-year-old woman in her Jamia Nagar apartment, while her husband, a 70-year-old retired music instructor from Jamia Millia Islamia, was found in critical condition and immediately rushed for medical treatment, authorities reported on Monday.
Their approximately 50-year-old son, Imran (also known as Shally), who has intellectual disabilities and psychiatric issues, was present in the residence. Though communicating from inside, he refused to open the entrance to the apartment, according to officials.
Police officials stated that a PCR call was logged at 11:10 pm on September 21 regarding a body at Gaffar Manzil in Jamia Nagar. The caller indicated that his sister and brother-in-law were unresponsive, and their son was preventing access to the home.
Upon arrival at the location, authorities forced entry into the residence. They discovered Aftab Jehan's decomposed body on the bed. Her husband, Siraz Khan, was found beside her in a severely weakened state. He was immediately transported to AIIMS Trauma Centre," explained Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Hemant Tiwari.
"During interrogation, the son was unable to communicate clearly and repeatedly stated that his parents were sleeping. He had isolated himself in the apartment for three to four days without nourishment and failed to seek assistance," the DCP added.
Initial assessment suggests the woman likely died from natural causes related to illness. The body was significantly decomposed with no visible external trauma. The definitive cause of death will be determined following post-mortem examination, the officer stated.
The couple's daughter, who resides in Hong Kong, had been attempting to contact her family for several days. After failing to reach them, she requested her maternal uncle, W Ahmed Khan, a resident of the area, to check on her family. He subsequently made the emergency call, according to police.
Authorities reported that Imran was initially taken to IHBAS Hospital in Shahdara and later transferred to GTB Hospital when no family members came forward to accompany him.
The crime investigation team has examined the scene, and proceedings under Section 176 of BNSS are currently underway, officials confirmed.
