Honour Social Innovators Too: Sudha Murty Cites QR Code Inventor's Example

New Delhi:

On Thursday, Rajya Sabha nominated member Sudha Murty advocated strongly for the recognition of social innovators. She emphasized that while technical innovations receive widespread acclaim and honors, those who develop solutions for everyday challenges often remain unacknowledged.

Speaking during Zero Hour, Murty illustrated her point by mentioning innovations like the idli grinder, which has significantly improved lives, especially for women, yet the creators of such practical solutions largely fade into obscurity.

"Technical innovations earn respect, awards, and applause, but other equally impactful achievements are frequently overlooked," she observed.

Murty referenced international examples, particularly highlighting the Japanese creator of the QR code who deliberately chose not to patent his innovation, making it freely accessible worldwide.

"He made it free, and through the QR code, both our economy and the global economy are flourishing tremendously. He did this for 'bahujana hitaya, bahujana sukhaya' - for the welfare and happiness of many," she explained.

The nominated member pointed out that while the government has established various award categories - including CSR recognition from the Department of Corporate Affairs and technology awards from the Department of Commerce and Industries - there is no specific award designation for social innovation.

"I urge the Indian government to establish a new award category specifically for social innovation, ensuring these innovators receive recognition and respect, which would benefit our entire society," Murty stated.

Drawing from her personal experience in the social sector, she recounted establishing similar awards and witnessing their positive impact firsthand.
