Chandigarh:
A professor at the Panjab University has been apprehended for the murder of his wife, who was discovered dead at their campus residence four years ago, according to police reports.
Professor B B Goyal was taken into custody on Monday following the results of his Brain Electrical Oscillation Signature profiling, commonly known as brain mapping.
Goyal, who serves as a senior professor at the University Business School in PU, appeared before a local court which subsequently placed him on a three-day police remand.
His wife, Seema Goyal, a homemaker, was found deceased at their PU residence on Diwali day, November 4, 2021.
Professor Goyal discovered her body with injury marks on the ground floor, with her hands and legs bound by cloth. He transported the body to a hospital before police arrived at the scene.
At the time of the incident, Goyal informed police that when their milkman arrived, he found the main door of the house secured from the outside.
The post-mortem examination of Seema confirmed strangulation as the cause of death.
Police investigations revealed no signs of forced entry, and all valuables remained in the house.
Forensic experts determined that the metal mesh on a door had been cut from the inside, contradicting the professor's assertion that an outsider had entered the home, killed his wife, and fled.
Seema's brother Deep alleged that the crime was committed by someone inside the residence.
Dissatisfied with the investigation's progress, he approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
During the investigation, the couple's daughter revealed that her parents had engaged in an argument the day before the murder.
In December 2021, police requested a narco-analysis test for the professor, but it could not be conducted as he was declared medically unfit due to his asthma condition.
Subsequently, police conducted Brain Electrical Oscillation Signature profiling of the professor at the National Forensic Sciences University in Rohini, Delhi.
The BEOS test, also referred to as brain mapping or brain fingerprinting, is a forensic technique used to determine whether an individual possesses experiential knowledge of a crime by analyzing specific brainwave patterns.
Police indicated that the BEOS findings showed the professor had experiential memories connected to the crime.
Based on this assessment, authorities concluded that Goyal was a key person of interest who needed to be taken into custody.
