They say when destiny decides to change, it doesn't simply knockāit erupts dramatically. In the diamond-abundant terrain of Madhya Pradesh's Panna district, fortune has made two spectacular appearances in a single week.
Rajendra Singh Bundela, a farmer from Khajuraho who had been paralyzed for eighteen months, returned to Panna after his recovery to test his fortune. He acquired a lease for a small mine at Krishna Kalyanpur Pati and began excavation with nothing but unwavering faith and resolve.
This week, his perseverance was rewarded with the discovery of a 3.39-carat gem-quality diamond, valued at approximately Rs 10 lakh.
Yet this isn't the only remarkable narrative that emerged from Panna this week.
Two struggling friends from Raniganj, Satish Khatik and Sajid Mohammad, who operated a modest meat shop and fruit stand respectively, witnessed their lives transform dramatically in just 20 days. What began as a desperate effort to escape financial hardship and raise funds for their sisters' weddings has evolved into a tale worthy of cinema.
Satish and Sajid combined their meager savings, leased a small 8x8 meter mining area in Panna, and hoped for divine intervention. Barely three weeks later, while digging in their leased plot, they uncovered an impressive 15.34-carat gem-quality diamond, estimated to be worth around Rs 50 lakh.
The precious stone has been deposited at the Diamond Office and awaits auction in the upcoming cycle. The two friends have prioritized funding the weddings of Sajid's two sisters, followed by investments to rebuild their financial futures.
What makes this discovery particularly poignant is the family legacy behind it. Sajid's grandfather and father had devoted decades to diamond mining in Panna, always hoping for a substantial find, but fortune never smiled upon them.
Yet the grandson, excavating the same earth, discovered what the family had been waiting generations for, and achieved this in just twenty days.
Panna, aptly named India's Diamond City, is renowned for producing world-class diamonds, ranging from pristine white stones used in luxury jewelry to off-color and cola-hued diamonds utilized in industrial cutting tools.
The process is straightforward though demanding:
Anyone can apply for a one-year mining lease by submitting their Aadhaar, photographs, and a Rs 200 challan.
Upon finding a diamond, it must be deposited at the Diamond Office.
After thorough examination and certification, it remains stored until auction.
Once sold, the government deducts 12.5% royalty and 1% TDS. The remainder goes directly to the finder.
