Potential TVK-AINRC Alliance in Puducherry: Vijay's Praise for Chief Minister Signals Political Shift Before 2026 Elections

Actor Vijay's recent praise for Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy, coupled with criticism of the BJP, has sparked serious discussions about a possible alliance between his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam party and the All India NR Congress ahead of the 2026 legislative assembly elections. AINRC leaders describe it as a "50-50" chance, as growing tensions with the BJP and Lieutenant Governor's office create opportunity for new political alignments in the Union Territory.

Following actor and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay's commendation of Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangaswamy - while simultaneously criticizing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the national level - political discussions in Puducherry have intensified with what senior All India NR Congress (AINRC) officials have characterized to NDTV as a "50-50" possibility of an AINRC-TVK coalition before the 2026 legislative assembly elections.

Speaking to NDTV, Puducherry PWD and Tourism Minister K Lakshmi Narayanan stated that Vijay's comments have provided significant political advantage to the AINRC. "Vijay's sentiments align with our Chief Minister Rangasamy. He has endorsed our longstanding concerns, including Puducherry's omission from the Finance Commission and the need for enhanced Central backing. This portrays our Chief Minister in a favorable light," Narayanan remarked.

A viral video showing Rangasamy viewing Vijay's Puducherry-focused speech live on a mobile device has fueled further speculation. Party sources indicate that the two have enjoyed a warm relationship for years, noting that during a fan gathering in Puducherry around 2002-03, Rangasamy and a minister had encountered the actor.

Despite its coalition with the BJP in Puducherry, the AINRC has grown increasingly disenchanted with its partner - a tension reportedly stemming primarily from the Lieutenant Governor's role. Party officials claim that the Lieutenant Governor's (L-G) Office "manages Puducherry as if it were an Opposition-governed state" and consistently impedes the elected government's initiatives.

Major points of contention include restrictions preventing the Chief Minister from making routine governmental appointments and the L-G's recent refusal to both regularize contract teachers and extend their contracts.

AINRC leadership contends that employment opportunities intended for local residents are being made available to all-India applicants, describing it as a "dictatorial approach." The leaders have also indicated that the BJP has done little to address these fundamental issues within the coalition, creating political necessity and opportunity for new alliances.

Puducherry elections are typically determined not by party vote percentages but by the personal connections candidates establish with constituents. Although major parties each command approximately 20 percent of the vote share, insiders maintain that local-level influence is the decisive factor.

In this scenario, Vijay's influence could prove pivotal. AINRC leaders estimate that between 2,000 and 3,000 voters in each Puducherry constituency - predominantly young and undecided voters - might gravitate toward the TVK leader due to his popularity and appeal. They believe this support could substantially strengthen NR Congress candidates locally and enhance the party's prospects of maintaining power in 2026.

For TVK, participating in its inaugural election in the neighboring Union Territory (UT), partnering with an established entity like the NR Congress could provide an immediate entry into governance. An alliance, leaders suggest, would enable TVK to participate in a ruling coalition at the very beginning of its political journey.

Vijay, who frequently references the legacy of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) founder and three-term Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MG Ramachandran (MGR), drew a significant historical comparison in his address. He reminded supporters that the AIADMK's first electoral triumph occurred not in Tamil Nadu but in Puducherry during the early 1970s, before MGR's party subsequently rose to power in the state.

Suggesting potential historical recurrence, Vijay implied that 2026 might witness Puducherry becoming TVK's pathway to power in Tamil Nadu, similar to the AIADMK's trajectory five decades ago.

When questioned about AINRC's willingness to terminate its association with the BJP and form an alliance with TVK ahead of the 2026 elections, a senior official stated, "There exists a 50-50 probability for an NR Congress-TVK alliance in 2026."

However, he added that unless Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally intervened to resolve the persistent issues with the L-G's office, "incorporating TVK will become an unavoidable option."

With Vijay's endorsement altering political dynamics and dissatisfaction growing within the ruling alliance, Puducherry may once again emerge as the starting point of a broader political realignment - one with potential repercussions extending well beyond the Union Territory.
