The victim was identified as an 18-year-old student from Malhargarh.
In a shocking development that has shaken Madhya Pradesh's law enforcement community, the Malhargarh police station—recently celebrated as the ninth-best police station in India—now faces severe disgrace after the High Court discovered disturbing evidence showing its officers kidnapped an innocent student and falsely implicated him in a drug smuggling case.
What police initially proclaimed as a "major narcotics arrest" has been revealed as a flagrant abuse of authority, compelling the Mandsaur Superintendent of Police to acknowledge before the High Court that the entire case was fabricated.
The 18-year-old victim, Sohan, a Class 12 student from Malhargarh, was forcibly removed from a moving bus on August 29. Later that day, police claimed he had been apprehended with 2.7 kg of opium and presented him in court the following day, resulting in his imprisonment.
CCTV recordings, mobile phone videos, and eyewitness testimonies painted a completely different picture of the events. The evidence revealed no drugs, no pursuit, and no seizure—only plainclothes police officers stopping a bus, forcibly removing the student, and taking him away.
His family subsequently approached the Indore bench of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on December 5, alleging unlawful abduction, wrongful arrest, and evidence fabrication.
During Tuesday's hearing, the High Court summoned Mandsaur Superintendent of Police Vinod Kumar Meena to appear personally. Meena admitted that Sohan was indeed apprehended from the bus by Malhargarh police officers. The arrest documented in the first information report (FIR) did not correspond with the actual time and location captured on video.
The entire operation was coordinated by a head constable from Malhargarh. The case registered against the student was filed after he was already in illegal custody, and the investigation failed to follow proper legal procedures.
In a major embarrassment, Meena also confirmed that the officers seen boarding the bus—whom the police had previously disavowed—were indeed police personnel from Malhargarh, contradicting earlier statements made by the district administration.
Meena informed the court that he has suspended six Malhargarh policemen, including those who removed the student from the bus, and has ordered a departmental inquiry into the matter.
The High Court has now reserved its judgment, with legal experts anticipating stringent action against the implicated officers.
Senior advocate Himanshu Thakur stated, "The court reviewed all evidence and accepted that Sohan was illegally kidnapped from a bus and falsely shown arrested with 2.7 kg of opium at 5 pm. He is a promising student who passed Class 12 with first division marks. The SP acknowledged in court that the Malhargarh police acted illegally and outside the boundaries of law. Even the officer who previously denied knowledge of the men boarding the bus has been contradicted; all were confirmed to be police officers."
Ironically, the Malhargarh police station had received national recognition just last month, ranking ninth among India's finest police stations.
