Pilibhit:

A police constable in Pilibhit filed a case against her husband, also a constable, and her in-laws, accusing them of dowry demands and subjecting her to cruelty, according to a police official on Tuesday.

The female constable serves at the Bisalpur police station in Pilibhit district, while her husband works at the Sector-20 police station in Gautam Buddh Nagar. In her complaint, she stated that on September 5, 2024, around 8 pm, she discovered her husband in an inappropriate situation with her sister-in-law, Shweta.

When she confronted them, her in-laws allegedly physically attacked her and forced her to consume sanitiser in what appeared to be a deliberate attempt to cause fatal harm, resulting in her hospitalization with serious health issues. Sanjeev Shukla, Station House Officer (SHO) of Bisalpur police station, confirmed that a case was registered on Sunday based on her complaint.

The case was filed under Sections 85 (husband or relative subjecting a woman to cruelty), 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 351(3) (criminal intimidation), and 352 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace) of the BNS, as well as the Dowry Prohibition Act.

Those named in the complaint include her husband Priyank Sharma, father-in-law Rajeshwar Prasad Sharma, mother-in-law Kunti Devi, brothers-in-law Anuj Sharma and Mukesh Sharma, and sisters-in-law Shweta and Santosh.

In her statement, the constable revealed she married Priyank Sharma, from Meerut district, on January 26, 2023. Her family reportedly spent approximately Rs 50 lakh on the wedding, providing a car, gold and silver jewelry, expensive clothing, electronics, furniture, and household items.

Despite this, she claimed her in-laws expressed dissatisfaction with the dowry items, describing them as inferior quality, and began demanding a Scorpio SUV just two days after the wedding. When she expressed inability to meet this demand, she alleged her in-laws verbally and physically abused her, even threatening her life.

The complainant further alleged that on July 13, 2023, her husband and father-in-law pressured her to take medication intended to ensure conception of a male child. After refusing, they allegedly came to Pilibhit and physically attacked her with lethal intent.

On January 30, 2024, she gave birth to a son in Meerut. She claimed that due to physical abuse during her pregnancy, the child suffered in-utero injuries and now experiences seizures.

Additionally, she accused her brother-in-law, Mukesh Sharma, of inappropriate behavior and attempting to molest her. She stated that on October 5, 2025, Mukesh allegedly raped her at gunpoint in Meerut.

As a result, a case was registered against Mukesh at the Kharkhauda police station under Sections 64 (punishment for rape), 74 (assault or criminal force with intent to outrage modesty), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), and 352 (intentional insult to provoke breach of peace) of the BNS, according to the complainant.
