Mumbai:
Former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya has escalated his accusations regarding a widespread fake birth certificate network, asserting that the operation spans multiple states and could potentially manipulate electoral rolls.
In an interview with NDTV, the BJP leader revealed that his persistent follow-up with the Mulund Tehsildar (revenue official) over the past two months has yielded initial results.
Somaiya reported that the Tehsildar has now instructed police to register FIRs against applicants who presented questionable or incomplete documentation.
"We have been pursuing this matter for two months. The Mulund Tehsildar has finally requested police to file FIRs against individuals who failed to provide proper documentation," he stated.
When questioned about government officials' involvement in the alleged scam, Somaiya indicated that numerous government officials are implicated and the Chief Minister will take appropriate action against them.
"In Nandurbar, 48 government officials were involved. The Chief Minister will make decisions regarding that case," he explained.
Somaiya maintained that these incidents are not confined to Mumbai.
"Mumbai alone has lakhs of fraudulent applicants. FIRs have been registered in 31 cities. This conspiracy extends beyond Maharashtra, with similar cases emerging in Saharanpur and Kolkata, where individuals are submitting falsified documents to obtain birth certificates and subsequently establish nationality claims," he alleged.
Somaiya also connected the alleged scam to political motives, accusing various opposition parties of facilitating what he termed "Vote jihad."
"Two types of gangs exist in our electoral system. One comprises those promoting vote jihad—Rahul Gandhi, Uddhav Thackeray, the Samajwadi Party, and AIMIM. Whenever I attempt to file complaints, they appear with black flags," he claimed.
Somaiya's allegations coincide with the Maharashtra government's directive to district administrations to review birth certificates issued throughout the state.
The order, issued last week, instructed authorities to retrieve these certificates for re-verification, stating that Aadhaar cannot be considered sufficient proof for recording births.
