Just prior to the theatrical release of Dhurandhar starring Ranveer Singh, Major Mohit Sharma's name garnered significant attention, particularly when his parents filed a court petition claiming the film was based on their son's life story.
Despite director Aditya Dhar's assertions to the contrary, the family maintained that Ranveer Singh's character drew inspiration from the late officer's real-life experiences. The High Court ultimately rejected this claim.
Major Mohit Sharma was celebrated for his exceptional bravery and daring operations. He executed some of the Indian Army's most perilous missions, including undercover infiltration of terrorist organizations by covertly joining a Hizbul Mujahideen group.
Following his demise, the army bestowed "next of kin" honors upon his widow, Rishima Sarin, which subsequently created familial tension.
Who is Rishima Sarin, Major Mohit Sharma's widow? Born in Punjab's Gurdaspur district, Rishima comes from a military background. Her father, Colonel Mohan Lal Sareen, is retired from service, while her brother serves as a colonel in an artillery regiment.
Rishima holds the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Indian Army. She enlisted in the Army Service Corps in 2001 and made history in 2023 as the first female officer appointed as an Agniveer recruiter.
The couple had two children together.
A dispute emerged between Rishima and her in-laws. In 2010, reports surfaced about legal disagreements between Major Sharma's parents and Rishima Sarin. His parents contended that legislation grants comprehensive rights solely to the widow while failing to recognize parental contributions.
The parents alleged exclusion from fundamental privileges, such as invitations to receive the Ashok Chakra and attendance at award ceremonies. According to his mother, they received passes just one day before Republic Day.
Additionally, the family claimed they were denied their son's service attire and footwear, as well as photography rights at his passing-out parade. They attributed these restrictions to Rishima and her military connections.
Rishima's father countered these claims, stating that after her husband's death, she required a month-long leave and psychiatric assistance to manage the stress caused by interactions with her in-laws.
