Indian Parliament Schedules 10-Hour Debate on Electoral Reforms: Government and Opposition Face Off

The Winter Session of Parliament began on December 1 and will continue till December 19.

Electoral reforms have become the focal point of an extended and politically charged debate in the Lok Sabha today, with the House allocating 10 hours for a comprehensive discussion during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament.

Time has been distributed equally between the ruling coalition and the Opposition, highlighting the significance attached to this crucial issue.

The discussion encompasses a broad spectrum of concerns, including the Election Commission's role, transparency in campaign expenditures, preventing candidates with criminal backgrounds from contesting, electronic voting machine reliability, and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.

The government maintains that this initiative aims to strengthen electoral integrity and enhance transparency and accountability in the democratic process. However, the Opposition is expected to vigorously address concerns regarding election fairness and voice objections to proposals such as "One Nation, One Election."

Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal will initiate the debate. Representing the BJP, MPs Nishikant Dubey, Abhijit Gangopadhyay, Sanjay Jaiswal, and PP Chaudhary are among those scheduled to speak. Notably, PP Chaudhary also chairs the Joint Parliamentary Committee examining the "One Nation, One Election" proposal.

Alliance partner Shiv Sena will be represented by Srikant Shinde and Naresh Mhaske in the discussions.

Arun Bharati will speak on behalf of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), while the Telugu Desam Party's representatives include Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu and GM Harish Balayogi.

From the Opposition side, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi will lead the Congress party's discussion. Over recent months, Gandhi has consistently alleged that the Election Commission and BJP have manipulated the electoral process—claims firmly rejected by the government.

Other Congress speakers expected to participate include KC Venugopal, Manish Tewari, Varsha Gaikwad, Mohammed Jawed, Ujjwal Raman Singh, Isa Khan, Ravi Mallu, Imran Masood, Gowal Padvi, and Jyotimani. The Congress party has issued a whip requiring all its MPs to be present during the debate.

The government's response to the debate is scheduled for December 10, with Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal set to provide the official reply on behalf of the Centre.
