Dr. Baba Adhav: Pioneering Social Activist and Maharashtra Labor Movement Leader Dies at 95

The distinguished social activist Dr. Baba Adhav, aged 95, passed away in Pune on Monday evening after battling a lengthy illness, according to his aide.

Dr. Adhav leaves behind his two sons, Asim and Amber, who survive him.

Pune witnessed the loss of a remarkable figure who was widely known as Babasaheb Pandurang Adhav or simply Baba Adhav. He was considered an essential cornerstone of Maharashtra's social and labor movements throughout his lifetime. His most notable achievement was founding the 'Hamal Panchayat,' a significant trade union representing headloaders.

Through this influential organization, Dr. Adhav successfully mobilized porters across Pune and other Maharashtra regions, an accomplishment regarded as a crucial landmark in his extensive decades of social service.

The veteran activist experienced a sudden health decline, resulting in his hospitalization at a private medical facility 12 days prior to his passing.

During his time in the hospital, the nonagenarian required life support measures but ultimately succumbed to cardiac arrest at 8:25 PM, as confirmed by his aide Nitin Pawar.

Throughout his life, Dr. Adhav remained a powerful champion for societal equality, notably leading the 'Ek Gaon Ek Panwatha' movement, a significant social initiative that fought against caste-based discrimination.
