Man Arrested in Noida for Attempting to Murder Stepchildren by Throwing Them into Drain

Police reported on Friday that a 22-year-old man was arrested for allegedly attempting to murder his two stepchildren by throwing them into a 10-foot-deep drain in Noida.

The incident occurred on Tuesday near Paras Tierra Society in Sector 137. Officials stated that the children, "a boy and a girl (both under five)," were rescued by delivery personnel who were passing by and heard their cries coming from the drain.

Sector 142 Police Station in-charge Sarvesh Chandra confirmed that a complaint was filed on Wednesday, leading to the arrest of the accused, Ashish, on Thursday.

"Ashish, originally from Kanpur and currently residing in Shahdara village in Sector 141, threw the children into the drain and fled the scene. Both children were later found safe and are in good health," he stated.

According to police investigations, Ashish and the children's mother, Neelam, come from the same village. Neelam was previously married to Ashish's cousin, during which time Ashish and Neelam developed a relationship.

When her husband discovered their affair, Ashish relocated Neelam and her two children to Noida, as reported by police.

"Being their stepfather, Ashish harbored resentment toward the children and did not want to keep them with him," police explained.

On Tuesday, he took Neelam to a market, abandoned her there, returned home, took the children, and threw them into the drain, officials added.

Police conducted medical examinations of the children and subsequently presented them to the Child Welfare Committee (CWC).

A case has been registered under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Sector 142 Police Station.
