Bengaluru Metro's Purple Line experienced a major disruption Friday morning lasting over an hour after an individual jumped onto the tracks at Kengeri Metro Station, resulting in a fatal incident. The man, later identified as Shantagoud Patil, died at the scene, causing temporary suspension of services between Mysore Road and Challaghatta stations and creating substantial inconvenience for morning rush hour commuters.
According to Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) officials, train operations were initially restricted to Mysore Road while emergency response personnel, law enforcement, and medical staff responded to the location. The authorities worked quickly to manage the situation.
BMRCL later posted on their official X account: "Dear All, Services between Jnana Bharathi and Challagatta have been fully restored as of 09:40 hrs. Train operations across the entire Purple Line are now running as per schedule."
While the motivation behind the incident remains under investigation, BMRCL confirmed in their social media statement that it was a suicide attempt. Metro officials successfully cleared the tracks at Kengeri station following the incident.
After conducting thorough safety inspections, the transit authority announced that services between Jnana Bharathi and Challaghatta stations resumed full operation at 9:40 am, with normal service restored throughout the entire Purple Line.
Officials are currently reviewing surveillance footage and collecting additional information to better understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
