Former Mizoram Governor and Legal Expert Swaraj Kaushal Dies at 73: A Legacy of Peace and Public Service

Senior lawyer and former Mizoram Governor Swaraj Kaushal, husband of late Union Minister Sushma Swaraj, has passed away at 73. Known for his pivotal role in the 1986 Mizoram Peace Accord and distinguished career spanning law and politics, he leaves behind a legacy of public service and northeast expertise. His daughter, BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj, paid an emotional tribute to his enduring influence.

Swaraj Kaushal, who married Sushma Swaraj in 1975, has passed away at the age of 73.

Senior advocate and former Mizoram Governor Swaraj Kaushal, spouse of late Union Minister Sushma Swaraj and father of BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj, died on Thursday at the age of 73.

In an emotional social media tribute, BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj wrote, "Papa Swaraj Kaushal ji, your affection, your discipline, your simplicity, your patriotism, and your boundless patience are the light of my life that will never dim."

She further expressed, "Your departure has caused me profound heartache, yet I find solace in believing that you have reunited with Mother, in divine presence, finding eternal peace."

Bansuri added that being his daughter remains her greatest pride, and his legacy, values, and blessings will guide her future journeys.

Leaders across political divides paid homage to Kaushal, whose cremation ceremony was held at the Lodhi Road crematorium on Thursday evening.

Born in Solan on July 12, 1952, Kaushal was a distinguished criminal attorney who received his education in Delhi and Chandigarh. He served as the Governor of Mizoram between 1990 and 1993.

His political career included serving as a member of Parliament from 1998 to 2004 representing Haryana as a Haryana Vikas Party leader. He was a Rajya Sabha member during 1998-99 and 2000-2004.

Kaushal and Sushma Swaraj married in 1975, and their only child, Bansuri Swaraj, currently serves as a BJP Lok Sabha member representing the New Delhi constituency. Sushma Swaraj passed away from a cardiac arrest in New Delhi on August 6, 2019.

Throughout his career, Kaushal developed expertise on Northeast India and its insurgency challenges. He played a crucial role in facilitating the Mizoram Peace Accord in 1986, which ended two decades of insurgency. In 1987, he was appointed as the first Advocate General of Mizoram.

During his early legal career, Kaushal gained recognition by representing socialist leader George Fernandes in the Baroda dynamite case during the 1975-77 Emergency period.
