IndiGo is experiencing significant passenger outrage following the cancellation of over 200 flights since Tuesday (Nov 2). India's largest airline has been struggling with operational challenges due to new, stricter duty-time regulations for pilots and cabin crew that took effect Monday (Nov 1).
The widespread disruption has left travelers stranded at airports across India, with many reporting wait times of 12-14 hours without clear information about their flight status. Passengers have flooded social media with complaints, highlighting IndiGo's inadequate customer service response during this crisis.
One frustrated traveler posted: "My Indigo Flight from Pune to Delhi is delayed by more than 3.5 hours. There are many flyers who have been waiting at the airport for more than 12 hours." Another passenger complained: "Indigo flight messup at Pune Airport. Shame on @IndiGo6E no passenger intimation at boarding gate, no staff, citizens self-service and worst is on display board says flight scheduled on time."
A viral video captured a desperate passenger pleading with IndiGo staff, saying: "Do anything, just give me a flight."
Passengers stranded at various airports shared their experiences through social media posts and videos, documenting long queues, lack of communication, and growing frustration. One traveler at Delhi airport described the situation as "absolute chaos & mockery" with staff "lying & passengers stranded since past 12+ hours with no confirmation."
Many travelers expressed concerns about missing important commitments, including weddings and medical appointments. The extensive delays have severely damaged IndiGo's reputation for reliability and punctuality, with numerous passengers vowing never to fly with the airline again.
Some observers pointed out broader industry implications, with one noting: "What we are seeing is the impact of a single player holding 66% market share! This is not the impact of Indigo cancellation. It is actually the impact of its dominance!"
IndiGo, which normally operates approximately 2,200 flights daily, has acknowledged the operational disruptions and issued an apology to customers. In a statement released Wednesday, the airline attributed the problems to "a multitude of unforeseen operational challenges," including technology issues, seasonal schedule changes, adverse weather, aviation system congestion, and the implementation of new crew rostering rules (Flight Duty Time Limitations).
The airline stated these factors had "a negative compounding impact on our operations in a way that was not feasible to be anticipated."
In response to the widespread disruptions, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India's aviation watchdog, has summoned IndiGo officials for a meeting on Thursday to address the situation.
