India launched Project Cheetah in 2022 with the purpose of protecting this magnificent species.
New Delhi:
On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted that Project Cheetah represents an initiative to restore lost ecological heritage and extended an invitation to wildlife enthusiasts worldwide to visit India to witness the majestic wild cat in its natural environment.
In his International Cheetah Day message on X, the prime minister sent his best wishes to "all wildlife lovers and conservationists committed to protecting the cheetah, one of the planet's most extraordinary creatures." "Three years ago, our Government initiated Project Cheetah aiming to safeguard this magnificent animal and restore ecosystems where it can truly flourish. This initiative also sought to revive lost ecological heritage and enhance our biodiversity," PM Modi stated.
He mentioned that India now proudly hosts numerous cheetahs, with a significant number born on Indian soil.
Many of these cheetahs are currently thriving in Kuno National Park and the Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary.
"It is encouraging to see growing popularity in cheetah tourism. I invite more wildlife enthusiasts from around the world to visit India and experience the cheetah in all its splendor," the prime minister added.
"Our achievements in cheetah conservation have been possible only through collective community support, especially from our dedicated Cheetah Mitras.
"Protecting wildlife and living harmoniously with nature are fundamental to India's civilizational ethos, and we witness that spirit alive today in these conservation efforts," the prime minister remarked.
Officials report that India's ambitious cheetah reintroduction program has entered a promising new phase, with notable progress in population growth, habitat expansion, and international partnerships.
A total of 20 cheetahs were introduced into Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh - eight from Namibia in September 2022 and twelve from South Africa in February 2023.
Officials noted that initial doubts about the cheetah reintroduction have now been proven wrong.
As of December 2025, India maintains a thriving population of 32 cheetahs, with 21 being India-born cubs.
In a recent milestone, an India-born female named Mukhi successfully delivered five healthy cubs in November 2025.
