Why Vladimir Putin Avoids Smartphones: Inside the Russian President's Strict Security Protocols

Putin has repeatedly acknowledged his limited proficiency with modern technology.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled for a two-day diplomatic visit to India on December 4 and 5. During this visit, he will engage in discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, attend a state banquet, and evaluate the "special and privileged strategic partnership" between India and Russia.

While most global leaders travel with extensive entourages and security arrangements, Putin distinguishes himself with his extraordinary "security web." This raises an interesting question: does the Russian leader use a mobile phone?

According to AFP News, despite facing constant threats, the Russian President does not possess a smartphone.

During a 2018 gathering with scientists and academics, Mikhail Kovalchuk, who heads the Kurchatov Nuclear Research Institute, mentioned that "everyone has a smartphone in their pocket." Putin responded directly: "You said that everyone has smartphones. But I don't have a smartphone."

In an interview with a Russian news channel, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed: "As far as I know Putin doesn't have a phone." He elaborated that "Using a smartphone puts one's privacy and security at risk and this poses a great danger particularly to any high-profile leader."

Many observers speculate that the actual reasons might differ from the officially stated ones.

Putin once informed Russian news agency TASS that mobile phones are completely prohibited inside the Kremlin, which serves as both the governmental center and Putin's residence. He affirmed that he doesn't use a smartphone, instead relying on official phone lines when communication is necessary.

The Russian leader has multiple times confessed that he struggles with modern technology. He has also expressed concerns regarding certain online content.

In a 2017 meeting with school children, Putin revealed that "he barely uses the internet." He has criticized the internet, describing it as a "special project of the CIA" and stating it is "half pornography."

Previously, Putin explained that he avoids mobile phones primarily for security reasons, as he distrusts such devices or anything connected to the internet. Reports suggest that even when phones or other internet-connected devices are present, they are kept at a distance from him.

When Putin visits foreign countries, his security team implements extensive precautions. Everything from his accommodation to his meals undergoes thorough inspection before his arrival. His security personnel even sanitize and clean the areas where he stays to ensure safety.

Additionally, food served to Putin undergoes special testing to eliminate any possibility of poisoning or contamination.
