Varanasi authorities have charged over 100 students following intense clashes at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus on Tuesday night. The confrontation involved significant stone pelting and damage to vehicles during an altercation between students and university security personnel.
Officials confirmed that Police and Pradeshik Armed Constabulary (PAC) teams were dispatched to the campus to restore order after the situation escalated rapidly.
Sources indicate the unrest began near Raja Ram Hostel following an incident where a vehicle allegedly struck a female student. When fellow students approached security staff to report the incident, what started as a verbal disagreement quickly deteriorated.
The confrontation intensified as students reportedly began throwing stones near the LD Guest House, resulting in considerable property damage. Some unconfirmed reports suggest several students may have sustained injuries during the incident.
Assistant Police Commissioner Gaurav Kumar addressed the situation on Wednesday, assuring that campus security has been fully restored. Lanka SHO Rajkumar Sharma stated that following a complaint filed by a BHU security officer, authorities have registered an FIR against two identified students and more than 100 unidentified individuals connected to the disturbance.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that a comprehensive investigation into the matter is currently underway.
