Authorities in Mumbai have filed a case against an individual who falsely presented himself as an officer from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO), along with three accomplices, for allegedly defrauding a jeweller of Rs 2.8 crore, according to officials.
On November 28, Shailesh Jain, a 57-year-old jeweller, submitted a complaint at the Lokmanya Tilak Marg Police Station against four individuals, as confirmed by an official on Monday.
In his statement, Jain explained that he first encountered a man identified as Vaibhav Paresh Thakar (32) in January 2024, who introduced himself as a Class I officer employed at the Chief Minister's Office.
According to the complainant's allegations, Thakar collaborated with his wife, mother-in-law, and an agent named Birju Salla to orchestrate a scheme that defrauded the jeweller of Rs 2.8 crore by obtaining money, gold, and diamonds under various false pretenses between February and April 2024.
Following the complaint, police have registered a case against the four individuals on charges of fraud, and an investigation into the matter is currently underway, the official stated.
