Hyderabad:

Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) has welcomed 20 transgender individuals into its security services, marking a significant advancement in both social inclusion and public transportation safety initiatives.

Having completed comprehensive security training, these new team members officially began their duties on Monday. They have been strategically positioned at selected metro stations and on trains, with a particular emphasis on enhancing women's safety measures and promoting inclusivity throughout the system.

Hyderabad Metro Rail stands as one of India's most extensive and technologically advanced urban transit networks, spanning three corridors with 57 stations and serving approximately 500,000 passengers daily.

With women representing nearly 30% of the total ridership, ensuring their safety, comfort, and confidence remains a top priority for HMRL's operational strategy.

This progressive initiative directly supports the Telangana government's broader commitment to inclusivity, dignity, and equal opportunity for marginalized communities. The government had previously begun implementing policies to integrate transgender individuals into various public service sectors, including positions as Assistant Traffic Marshals last year.

The inclusion of transgender security personnel represents a meaningful milestone in HMRL's ongoing mission to create an environment that is safe, inclusive, and passenger-oriented. Their presence will significantly strengthen the existing safety framework, particularly benefiting women passengers.

Sarfaraz Ahmad, Managing Director of HMRL, expressed pride in this initiative, highlighting its dual benefits: "Bringing these 20 trained transgender personnel into our workforce is a tremendous achievement for the Hyderabad Metro family. This goes beyond enhancing security—it demonstrates our commitment to social empowerment and aligns with the Government of Telangana's vision for an inclusive society. These personnel will play a vital role in strengthening our frontline passenger services and reassuring women commuters, ensuring Hyderabad Metro remains a space where all citizens can travel with confidence and dignity."

The newly integrated personnel will focus on passenger welfare and security, actively supporting and enhancing safety measures throughout general areas and within dedicated ladies-only coaches.

They will assist travelers with directions, information, and on-site support. Additionally, they will provide baggage scanner assistance to ensure efficient and secure passenger movement at concourse levels.

As part of their Station Security Support responsibilities, they will maintain a visible, reassuring, and accessible security presence across all designated station premises, including street-level and concourse areas.
