New Delhi:
The Central Bureau of Investigation has apprehended an individual connected to the 1989 kidnapping of Rubaiyya Sayeed, the daughter of then Union Home Minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed, officials confirmed on Monday.
The suspect, who resides in Ishber Nishat, was taken into custody for his alleged participation in the crime that occurred 36 years ago, according to authorities.
Rubaiyya Sayeed was abducted by JKLF terrorists on December 8, 1989, and released five days later after the BJP-supported V P Singh government agreed to free five terrorists in exchange. She currently resides in Tamil Nadu and serves as a prosecution witness for the CBI, which assumed responsibility for the investigation in the early 1990s.
Yasin Malik, identified as a principal accused in the kidnapping case, is currently incarcerated in Tihar jail following his May 2023 sentencing by a special NIA court in a separate terror-funding case.
