Historic 150 Years of Vande Mataram: Special Parliamentary Debate to Honor India's National Song

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to participate in a special parliamentary discussion this week.

The Lok Sabha is planning to conduct a special discussion later this week commemorating 150 years of Vande Mataram. This occasion will provide members with an opportunity to explore various aspects of India's cultural heritage, alongside examining the patriotic song's significant role in the freedom movement and its contemporary relevance.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is anticipated to join this important discussion.

A senior MP stated, "The Lok Sabha is likely to host a comprehensive and special discussion at the conclusion of this week to mark 150 years of Vande Mataram. This discussion is expected to be a prominent highlight of Parliament's Winter Session. It will create a platform for discussing India's cultural heritage, Vande Mataram's impact during the freedom movement, and its significance in modern India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also expected to contribute to the discussion."

The MP further mentioned that the discussion will demonstrate the government's dedication to highlighting this composition, which has inspired numerous generations of freedom fighters and nation builders and remains an enduring symbol of India's national identity and collective spirit.

Sources indicate that the House is expected to dedicate approximately 10 hours to discussing this subject.

The 150th anniversary of India's National Song Vande Mataram, which translates to "Mother, I Bow to Thee," was observed on November 7, 2025.

This enduring anthem has inspired countless generations of freedom fighters and nation builders, standing as a lasting emblem of India's national identity and collective spirit.

Composed by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, 'Vande Mataram' was initially published in the literary journal Bangadarshan on November 7, 1875.

Subsequently, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee incorporated the hymn into his immortal novel 'Anandamath,' published in 1882.

The musical arrangement was created by Rabindranath Tagore. The song has become an integral component of the nation's civilizational, political, and cultural consciousness.

PM Modi inaugurated the year-long commemoration of 150 Years of 'Vande Mataram' in the national capital on November 7.

Addressing the gathering during this occasion, PM Modi remarked that Vande Mataram is not merely a word—it is a mantra, an energy, a dream, and a solemn resolve. He emphasized that Vande Mataram embodies "devotion and spiritual dedication to Maa Bharati".

The Prime Minister stated that the song connects people to the country's history, fills the present with confidence, and inspires the future with the courage to believe that no resolve is beyond fulfillment, and no goal is beyond reach.

Describing the collective singing of Vande Mataram as a truly sublime experience, transcending the boundaries of expression, PM Modi noted that amidst many voices, there emerged a singular rhythm, a unified tone, a shared thrill, and a seamless flow. The Prime Minister declared that November 7 is a historic day as the nation celebrates 150 years of Vande Mataram.

The winter session of Parliament commenced on Monday and will continue until December 19.
