UP Authorities File Cases Against 12 More Pharmaceutical Companies in Codeine Cough Syrup Smuggling Investigation

Uttar Pradesh's food and drugs department has expanded its investigation into codeine-containing cough syrup smuggling in Varanasi by filing cases against 12 additional pharmaceutical firms. These companies were found either closed or replaced by other businesses when investigators attempted to inspect them. This action follows earlier cases filed against 26 other pharmaceutical companies involved in the same smuggling operation.

Varanasi:

On Friday, the Uttar Pradesh government's food and drugs department filed a case against 12 additional pharmaceutical companies in relation to the codeine-containing cough syrup smuggling operation in Varanasi.

The department had previously filed cases against 26 pharmaceutical firms.

Department Inspector Janab Ali stated that the initial case against 26 firms was filed on November 15. During that investigation, they also identified 12 more suspicious companies.

When investigators went to examine these 12 firms, they discovered that the establishments were either shut down or other businesses were operating at the registered addresses, according to Ali.

He explained that notices were sent to the operators of these pharmaceutical companies requesting clarification. When the owners failed to respond, authorities filed a case against them at the Kotwali police station.
