Lucknow:
Tension has gripped a village in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh after a 19-year-old student lost his life during an early morning raid by cattle thieves.
The victim, Deepak Gupta, a NEET aspirant from Pipraich in Gorakhpur district, was killed when cattle smugglers invaded the village. According to villagers, the smugglers arrived in two vehicles around 3 am and began stealing cattle from local sheds. When residents heard the commotion and raised an alarm, several villagers including Deepak rushed out to confront the thieves.
As the smugglers attempted to escape in their vehicles, Deepak pursued one of them. The smugglers reportedly pulled him into their vehicle, assaulted him, and later his body was discovered approximately 4 km from his residence with a severe head wound.
While villagers claim Deepak was shot, police investigations suggest the fatal injury may not have been caused by a bullet but rather from being pushed from the moving vehicle.
Furious over the young student's death, villagers intercepted one of the smugglers' vehicles, set it ablaze, and assaulted an occupant they managed to capture. The second vehicle managed to flee the scene.
Two police officials - Additional Superintendent of Police (North) Jitendra Srivastava and Piprachi Station House Officer Purushottam - sustained injuries while attempting to take the captured smuggler into custody.
Following the incident, Pipraich residents blocked the Gorakhpur road and staged a protest demanding immediate action against those responsible for the student's death. After approximately six hours, senior police officials convinced the protesters to disperse, allowing traffic to resume.
Senior Superintendent of Police Raj Karan Nayyar stated, "Cattle smugglers entered the village with two vehicles around 3 am. One vehicle became stuck, and its occupants escaped. When the other vehicle was fleeing, a young man gave chase and was later found dead. The body has been sent for post-mortem. Though some claim he was shot, preliminary evidence doesn't support this. We've deployed teams to apprehend the culprits. Villagers caught one injured smuggler."
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed police to take stringent action against the perpetrators.
