Assam Introduces Stringent Anti-Polygamy Bill: Up to 7 Years Imprisonment for Offenders

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has introduced a comprehensive anti-polygamy bill that proposes imprisonment up to seven years for first-time offenders and ten years for those concealing existing marriages. The legislation aims to eliminate polygamous practices statewide except in Sixth Schedule areas and for Scheduled Tribes, while providing compensation to affected women and imposing additional consequences including disqualification from government employment and benefits.
