India's Suicide Crisis: 1.7 Lakh Deaths in 2023 with Family Problems and Illness as Leading Causes

According to the latest NCRB report, India recorded 171,418 suicides in 2023, a 0.3% increase from 2022. Family problems (31.9%) and illness (19%) were the major causes, with Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh reporting the highest numbers. Young adults between 18-45 years were most vulnerable, while housewives constituted over half of female victims. The national suicide rate stands at 12.3 per lakh population, with Andaman & Nicobar Islands recording the highest regional rate.
