Supreme Court Rules Forced Acid Ingestion Cases Must Be Tried as Attempted Murder

India's Supreme Court has ruled that cases where victims are forced to consume acid must be prosecuted as attempted murder rather than grievous hurt. The landmark decision came during a hearing of a petition filed by acid attack survivor Shaheen Malik, who seeks to include victims of forced acid ingestion under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act. The Court directed all states to respond regarding amendments to compensation schemes and scheduled the next hearing for January 2026.
