The Assam government has approved legislation prohibiting polygamy with penalties of up to seven years imprisonment and victim compensation. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the bill excludes Scheduled Tribes and won't immediately apply in Scheduled Areas, with special exemptions for pre-2005 minority Muslim residents in these regions.
