The Supreme Court has refused to initiate contempt proceedings against a 71-year-old lawyer who attempted to throw a shoe at Chief Justice of India BR Gavai during court proceedings. While acknowledging the act constituted serious contempt of court, Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi respected the CJI's decision to pardon the lawyer, but indicated they would consider establishing preventive guidelines to protect judicial dignity and prevent similar incidents in the future.
