India's Major Airlines Employ Nearly 14,000 Pilots: Aviation Ministry Data Reveals Distribution Across Carriers

The Indian aviation sector currently employs 13,989 pilots across six major domestic airlines, with Air India leading at 6,350 pilots followed by IndiGo with 5,085 cockpit crew members. The Ministry of Civil Aviation also highlighted ongoing efforts to enhance pilot training infrastructure with 40 Flying Training Organizations operating across 62 bases nationwide, as India's aviation industry continues to expand.

In its first-ever assessment of Flying Training Organizations (FTOs) in India, the DGCA found none of the 35 institutions qualified for top ratings. The comprehensive evaluation placed 13 FTOs in category 'B' and 22 in category 'C', highlighting significant room for improvement in India's aviation training sector. Underperforming schools will receive notices to develop improvement plans, with the next evaluation scheduled for April 2026.
