Religious organizations in Kashmir have strongly opposed a government directive requiring schools across Jammu and Kashmir to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram. The Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU), a coalition of religious scholars, claims the order infringes on religious freedoms by compelling Muslim students to participate in activities that conflict with Islamic teachings.
